At about noon on Saturday, Oct. 14th, a terrorist drove a truck containing a bomb into the center of Mogadishu, Somalia. There are over 500 casualties in this terrorist attack, according to The Guardian. The attack on Somalia is been blamed on the militant group al-Shabaab. In the truck, there were dozens of military-grade explosives as well as homemade explosives.

The militant group al-Shabaab is also called “The Movement of Striving Youth” which is based in East Asia. This group is an offshoot of the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) and is now known as an extremist splinter from the ICU. This organization has been around since 2006  and has carried out almost 360 attacks on Somalia in the last 10 years.

A little while after the first bomb went off in Mogadishu, a second bomb was ignited; however, there are no causalities of this second bomb that have been reported.

The information minister of Somalia disclosed on Monday that there are over 300 dead as well as more than 200 injured in this terrorist attack, although this number is expected to rise as some people are still missing after this attack.

Almost 60 people are still missing after this attack. Two U.S. citizens are among the dead. Later the United States White House issued a statement condemning this attack.

This terrorist attack is the worst in Somalia’s history. Now, over a week later officials found out that the intended target was the Turkish base located in Somalia. This is the largest Turkish base located outside of Turkey. This is due to Turkey being Somalia’s largest aid.
